People often say that religion is the cause of so much evil in this world. And I admit that there is some truth in that statement. However, to put all the blame on Christianity would be too simplistic. Remember what happened in the 20th century? What happened under the regimes of Mao Zedong, Stalin and Hitler? The worst atrocities in our history were done. More than 60 million people died because of these three men. With values contrary to Christianity and an anticlerical objective, one can just as much and even more criticize their actions.
When the Crusades, the Inquisition and all these condemnable events happened, those who called themselves Christians made the worst mistake that could be made. It was the politicization of religion (the use of religion as a political means). They said they wanted to install a theocracy when in reality they used religion as a means for their own interests. When we look at the faults committed by those who claimed to be religious, it is clear that these people violated the very foundations of the Christian faith.
When Jesus was betrayed by Judas, his disciples tried to defend Jesus with the sword. Jesus turned to them and told them to put away their swords and he healed the soldier’s ear. He also said to Pilate, « My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have fought so that I would not be handed over to the Jews. » Some have used violence for their own interests, but Jesus did the opposite: he gave himself for our own interests.
The real question we should ask ourselves is: what can we accuse Jesus of?
